A bill imposing taxes on night vigils in Kisii county has sparked opposition from churches. One notable voice opposing the bill is Peter Morwabe, an Embassy Gospel Minister, who contends that taxing night vigils at churches is unnecessary and detrimental to the community.
Morwabe stated, “I implore our MCAs to reconsider their choice. Churches are inherently non-profit entities, and imposing taxes on night vigils is unjustifiable. People participate in night vigils often due to financial constraints, seeking divine blessings for their financial well-being. How can they be expected to pay additional taxes under these circumstances?”
Additionally, Morwabe expressed surprise that the Governor of Kisii County, Simba Arati, has not commented on the issue. He suggested that the MCAs might be attempting to create friction between the church and the governor. The absence of an official statement from the governor’s office adds to the uncertainty surrounding the bill’s implications.
