Citizens from Kisii County have expressed mixed reactions on the 2023/2024 budget which was presented before parliament on 15th June by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndungu.

A section of them have expressed skepticism especially with the impending hike in value added tax (VAT) on fuel products.

“According to me, this budget has affected Kenyans in general. The fuel tax has been increased from 8% to 16%. This means that the cost of living will rise,” one said.

Speaking from Kisii Town, Justine Kangwana, the assistant manager, Ena Coach, said that the budget has affected Kenyans since the cost of living is getting higher.

“The Matatu sector has been affected by the increase in the cost of fuel products. Transport fee will have to be increased,” he added.

They have now called on the government to be more open about the content of the budget and deliver levies that are friendly to common citizens citing the already high cost of commodities.

Njuguna proposed to spend a total of 3.6 trillion to run President William Ruto’s first term administration while maintaining a tough balancing between debt servicing and supporting economy recovery.

This is the first financial year under the Kenya Kwanza administration, which came in power after the August 9, 2022 election.
