WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR
Written by Valentine Ndeta on June 12, 2024
Every year on June 12th, the global community comes together to observe the World Day Against Child Labour. This important day serves as a reminder of the millions of children worldwide who are deprived of their childhoods, education, and opportunities due to forced labour. It is a day to renew our commitment to eliminating child labour in all its forms and to take concrete steps toward ensuring every child’s right to a safe, healthy, and productive future.
The theme for this year’s World Day Against Child Labour is “Social Justice for All. End Child Labour!” This theme underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures that address the root causes of child labour and promote equitable access to education, healthcare, and decent work for all.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), over 160 million children are engaged in child labour, with a significant number involved in hazardous work that endangers their health and well-being. Guy Ryder, Director-General of the ILO, emphasizes, “Every child deserves the chance to thrive, not just survive. It is our collective responsibility to eradicate child labour and ensure social justice for all.”
Celebrations of this day include various activities aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action against child labour. Governments, NGOs, and community groups organize educational campaigns, workshops, and cultural events to highlight the plight of child workers and advocate for their rights. Schools and universities often host discussions and seminars to educate young people about the importance of eradicating child labour and promoting children’s rights.
One good example of the global commitment to this cause is the message from Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of UNICEF, who stated, “Child labour is a tragedy that must end. Together, we can create a world where children are free to learn, play, and grow.”
By celebrating the World Day Against Child Labour, we honour the resilience of children affected by labour and pledge to continue our efforts until every child can enjoy a childhood free from exploitation. It is a call to action for all of us to work towards a future where children’s rights are protected, and their potential is fully realized.
