Ruto: Atwoli ‘Suicide’ Claims Dehumanizing

On Monday, COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli made some observations concerning Deputy President William Ruto’s response to the country’s election failure.

Speaking in Mombasa, Atwoli predicted that the Azimio La Umoja group will win the State House contest, warning that DP Ruto could take his own life if he loses the election.

There is an issue with William Samoei Ruto’s ability to get the job done in the time allotted to him, so we’re giving him the opportunity to prove himself in the next round of interviews, and we’re saying, “Wale wako na William Samoei Ruto’s ability to get the job done in the time allotted to him” Atwoli made the statement.

Ruto’s presidential campaign team released a statement on Tuesday condemning the statements as degrading and unpleasant efforts at comedy, stating that suicide is a serious problem impacting Kenyans.

According to a statement, “…to use suicide as humor in electioneering, at a national health function attended by the Health Cabinet Secretary and presided by the Head of State and consequently finding it funny, is a demonstration of just how far these elite are from reality and the struggles of the Kenyan Hustler,” said the statement.

“It’s mind-boggling how full it is with Thadharau.”

“The Kenyan government, via the DCI, has expressed concern over the rising incidence of suicides in the nation,” it said. Between April and June of 2021, 483 cases were reported.

Further, a KNCHR investigation connected the increase in instances to mental illness induced by a breakdown of socio-economic protections.

To protect their privilege at the cost of the average Kenyan, “theirs is a coalition of elites to realize this,” we believe.

In addition to denigrating Atwoli as a “old campaign master,” the team said that winning or losing elections is not a “matter of life and death,” accusing the Raila Odinga-led camp of using such comments to incite people to violent action.

There is no need for these comments, which defy the principles of democracy. According to the statement, “For Kenyans who have been subjected to violence and death both within and outside of elections, this is not a funny issue.”
