LATRINE CLAIMS LIFE OF A STUDENT IN NYAKACH

A student in Nyabondo Boys’ High School in Nyakach, Kisumu County has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a pit latrines on Monday evening.

According to the county’s Ministry of Education Quality Assurance officer Arita Bwana, the body of the 15-year-old Form One student was discovered inside the rubble after the pit latrine caved in on him.

Bwana added that three other students who were using the latrine when it collapsed were, however, lucky to survive.

One has been treated and discharged while the other two are still admitted in hospital but in stable condition.

“We could not say there were any structural defects but it looks like over time, the soil underneath had been getting into the toilet and that is why the toilet sank in,” he said.
