Six more bodies were retrieved from river Shire in Malawi after a boat carrying almost 37 people was tipped over by a hippo in Southern Malawi on Monday 15th, 2023.

13 people and a one-year-old child of between 17 years to 57 years, were earlier retrieved on Monday and seventeen are still missing.

“The bodies were retrieved from Shire River in Malawi on Wednesday found in Nsanje District bringing the total number of deaths to six,” said the Police Spokesman, Agnes Zalakoma.

Speaking from Malawi Gladys Ganda a lawmaker says that the villagers were crossing the river to get to their farms at the Malawian boarder when the boat they were travelling in was struck by a hippo.

The river is infested with hippos and crocodiles therefore is dangerous and those using the river should be careful to avoid death.

The rescuers are still searching for the remaining bodies.
