Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental health disorder characterized by a long-term pattern of exaggerated self-importance, a need of excessive attention and admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. It falls under the category of personality disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR).
There are some key symptoms of Narcissistic personality disorders for example; Preoccupation with fantasies of success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love, Need of excessive admiration, Grandiosity-an inflated sense of self-importance, Belief that they are special or unique, and can only be understood by or associate with, other high- status people or institutions, Sense of entitlement-unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment or automatic compliance, Exploitive behavior in relationships- taking advantage of others to achieve their own goals, Lack of empathy, Envy of others or the belief that others are envious of them, and finally being Arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.
The exact cause of NPD isn’t fully understood but it likely involves: Early childhood experiences such as excessive praise or excessive criticism, Genetic Predisposition (inherited traits) and Environmental factors like parenting style, neglect, or trauma.
Effects and complications of Narcissistic personality disorder.
The effects of NPD can be profound, impacting both the individual with the individual with the disorder and the people around them. Here is a breakdown of its effects;
Relationship struggles- difficulty in maintaining healthy personal and professional relationships due to their tendency to manipulate or exploit others and also conflicts due to lack of empathy or inability to take criticism.
Work and career challenges- difficulty working under authority or in team environments. Their unrealistic goals or entitlement, overestimation of abilities and challenges can lead to career setbacks.
Emotional instability and isolation- the individual may have fragile self-esteem hidden behind arrogance. Experience mood swings, depression or anxiety when not validated or admired. The individual may seem to push others away through controlling or self- centered behavior.
People with narcissistic traits can be difficult to deal with interpersonally; NPD is a clinical diagnosis and shouldn’t be confused with everyday confidence. While NPD cannot be always be prevented, especially if there’s a strong genetic predisposition; nurturing emotional intelligence, empathy and healthy self- esteem from a young age, greatly reduces the risk.
