Manchester City’s epic comeback seals Premier League title on Dramatic Finale

On the season’s last day, Manchester City won the Premier League championship for the fourth time in five years following a thrilling finish.
City fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Aston Villa to win 3-2, giving them a one-point lead over Liverpool with a superior goal differential of six. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard failed to offer his childhood team any favors, though. Former Liverpool defender Philippe Coutinho also played a role in bringing Liverpool on the edge of glory after scoring a second-half goal to put Aston Villa 2-0 up.
After a spirited City comeback, Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple ambition was dashed. Ilkay Gundogan, a 76-minute replacement, gave City hope. There were relief and excitement on the pitch as Rodri’s equalizer was cancelled out by Gundogan’s second goal four minutes later.
Pedro Neto gave Wolves the lead at Anfield in the first half, but Sadio Mane equalized for Liverpool in the second half to ensure that the defending champions had to settle for a draw. Things went from bad to worse when Villa’s Matty Cash startled the Etihad with a goal, and they went from bad to worst again when Coutinho scored. After all, City had fought back from the brink of loss to win 2-1. The Reds came out on top by a score of 3-1, but it wasn’t enough.
After losing their season opener against Tottenham Hotspur, Pep Guardiola’s team rebounded to take a 14-point lead over Liverpool in February. An impressive comeback by Jurgen Klopp’s players — who had two less games under their belts at that stage — allowed them to stay in contention going into Week 17. City, on the other hand, is the proud owner of the championship trophy they won last year.
Guardiola has now won back-to-back championships twice with City. Only Manchester United and Chelsea have won the Premier League’s championship in the league’s history.
This season, they’ve only lost three games and surrendered 11 points in 19 road games, winning 14. With 93 points, City have topped 90 for the third time under Guardiola after reaching 100 in 2018 and 98 in 2019.
Liverpool’s record quadruple was snatched away by their championship success. This Saturday, Liverpool will meet Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris after winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Both Manchester City and Liverpool drew 2-2 and a 3-2 win for Klopp’s men in this season’s Premier League and FA Cup semi-finals, respectively.
