Benard Ouma, a man from Kajulu Hills in Kisumu, has recounted a painful chapter of his life that began in 2016 when he left his family home in search of work in Mombasa. Benard forgave the woman who filed assault charges against him. Benard says he travelled to the Coast region to take up a contract job, hoping to improve the livelihood of his parents and of his young family. How Benard knew wife was cheating In an interview with Itugi TV, he disclosed that his line of work helped stabilise his finances, giving him the confidence to start a family.
“I asked my uncle to help me buy several heads of cattle that I used to pay dowry and make the union official,” he started. However, while he was away, he received distressing messages alleging that his wife, Esther, was involved in an affair with someone he considered a close friend. When he returned home without prior notice, emotions ran high when he questioned her about the alleged affair, and a confrontation between them escalated into violence. In the process, Esther sustained a serious spinal injury and, with the help of the man she was reportedly cheating with, filed a case against him. Following the unfortunate incident, police officers arrested Benard at his home, and he was later charged in court with assault.
The passionate welder was subsequently convicted and sentenced to five years in prison at Kodiaga Prison. While serving his sentence, Benard says he put his welding skills to use, working on various tasks within the prison environment . He also describes a period of relative stability, supported by good conduct that reportedly earned him trust among prison officers and members .Benard further claims that he received visits from several women during his time inside. After serving part of his sentence, Benard was released three months early on account of good behaviour. In a surprising turn of events, he says he later made the decision to forgive his former wife, Esther, reflecting on the incident as a painful lesson that changed the course of his life. Granted a bond of KSh 200,000, his family could not raise the money, leaving him in remand for over a year. The 26-year-old recalled losing his father while still in remand and enduring the harsh realities of Kodiaga Maximum Prison. What kept him going was hope and the brotherhood he found in a prison.
