From Bunge la Mwananchi Microphone to DCI Custody

Evans Kawala, better known as “Kidero Jasuba,” went missing on the evening of 26 May 2026 in Kayole, Nairobi.

The Bunge la Mwananchi activist was picked up near Shujaa Mall by men in plain clothes. For hours his phone was off, and rumors of an abduction spread fast. Governor James Orengo accused the state of targeting Kawala for speaking out against President Ruto’s government at Jacaranda Grounds.

By Wednesday afternoon, the DCI confirmed he was in custody. Officials said he was arrested lawfully over inflammatory remarks posted online that they claim threatened public peace and national stability. He was taken by the Operations Support Unit and remains held pending arraignment.

Kawala, 33, is known for his sharp criticism at Bunge la Mwananchi forums. His supporters say he was targeted for his voice. The DCI says he crossed a legal line.

The incident has reignited debate on free speech and how dissent is handled in Kenya. For now, Kawala awaits court, and Jacaranda Grounds waits for its loudest voice to return.
