Aspiring Kisii Women Representative Dr. Roselyne Nyakona has raised alarm over the rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Kisii County and across Kenya. Speaking during a live interview at Radio Vuna on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Dr. Nyakona condemned the surge in GBV incidents, describing them as a grave threat to the dignity, safety, and wellbeing of women, children, and vulnerable groups.
She urged authorities, community leaders, and civil society organizations to intensify awareness campaigns, strengthen enforcement of existing laws, and dismantle cultural practices that shield perpetrators. According to Dr. Nyakona, GBV victims often suffer in silence due to stigma, fear, and weak reporting systems, making it critical for leaders to champion survivor support services such as rescue centers, counseling, and legal aid.
Her remarks come just a day after Nyamira Women Representative Jerusha Momanyi, while addressing residents in Geturi, Kitutu Chache North, also condemned the rising GBV cases. Momanyi emphasized that violence against women and children undermines family stability and community development, calling for urgent collective action to protect vulnerable groups.
Dr. Nyakona stressed that GBV is not only a women’s issue but a societal challenge that requires unity across all sectors, including churches, schools, and the media. She pledged to prioritize policies that safeguard survivors and promote equality if elected, urging Kisii residents and Kenyans at large to speak out, report cases promptly, and stand firm against perpetrators.
Together, the two leaders’ voices highlight growing concern in Gusii and beyond, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts to end GBV and restore dignity and safety for all.
