Detectives are investigating the killing of an eight-year-old girl in an incident in which her uncle is alleged to have attacked her before an angry mob reportedly torched the suspect’s house in Kitutu Central Sub-County, Kisii County.

Police said the incident occurred at Nyamatuta Village in Bigege Sub-location on May 19.

According to investigators, the 32-year-old suspect is alleged to have attacked the Grade Two pupil, inflicting fatal injuries.

The child had reportedly gone home for lunch and was returning to school when the incident occurred.

She sustained a deep cut on the right side of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the motive behind the killing had not been immediately established, although preliminary findings suggested the suspect had longstanding family disagreements with his elder brother, who is the girl’s father.

Following the incident, the suspect reportedly presented himself at Gisieka Police Post in neighbouring Marani Sub-County, where he was arrested before being transferred to Nyanchwa Police Station.

Shortly afterwards, residents reportedly descended on the suspect’s home and set it ablaze, destroying property whose value had not been established.

Detectives processed the scene before the body of the minor was moved to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, police in Gem Yala Sub-County, Siaya County, are investigating the suspected killing of an 88-year-old man who was found with severe head injuries near his home in Jina Village.

The elderly man was reportedly discovered lying along the Jina–Sagam murram road, about 300 metres from his homestead, with deep cuts to the face and head on May 19.

The motive behind the incident had not been established by Thursday.

The deceased, identified by police as William Ochieng Okwacha, was said to routinely walk to the market early on market days.

On Tuesday morning at around 4:20 am, he is believed to have been attacked by unknown assailants using a sharp object.

Family members and villagers rushed him to Yala Level IV Hospital, where he received first aid before doctors referred him to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

However, as arrangements were being made for the transfer, he succumbed to the injuries at about 2:45 pm.

The body was moved to the Yala Level IV Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the death, police said on Thursday.
