THE CHALLENGE OF DRUG ABUSE AMONG CAMPUS STUDENTS.

The issue of drug abuse has been a problem facing, many citizens in the country, most especially, among students in the tertiary level of education, that is, students in university, colleges and Technical and vocational training centers(Tvets). sometimes you might be surprised finding high school students caught using drugs in school and off the school.
The vibrant campus life, often portrayed in glowing terms, has a darker side that’s increasingly prevalent: drug abuse. It’s a story that unfolds in hushed tones, behind closed doors, and within the shadows of academic institutions.
The pressures of campus life, Academic stress, social expectations and the search for identity create a breeding ground for drug and substance abuse. Students, seeking an escape or a means to fit in, often turn to drugs. What starts as casual experimentation can quickly spiral into addiction, with devastating consequences.
The cycle of addiction on campus is a complex web, with students struggling with their studies, relationships, and mental health. The availability of drugs, coupled with the lack of awareness and support, makes it difficult for those caught in the web to break free. The story of drug abuse on campus is a cautionary tale, highlighting the need for proactive measures to protect the well-being of students.
The acquisition of drugs on campus often involves a network of dealers who operate discreetly. These dealers may be fellow students or external individuals who target the student population. Drugs are often obtained through informal channels, such as word of mouth referrals, social media, or hidden spots on or near campus.
Financing drug use is a significant challenge for students. They may use their allowances, savings, HELB loan acquired from the government or even resort to borrowing money. Some students engage in illegal activities, such as selling drugs themselves, to fund their addiction and some may start stealing properties mostly electronic gadgets (phones, laptops) from their fellow students so that they can sell and get the finances to carter for the drugs. The financial strain often leads to further problems, including debt, theft, and academic struggles.
The issue of drug abuse on campus ultimately serves as a call to action. It underscores the urgent need for comprehensive prevention programs, increased awareness, and accessible support systems. By addressing the root causes of addiction, promoting mental health, and fostering a culture of open dialogue, we can help create a safer and healthier environment for all students. If everyone will sit and fold their arms, then drugs and substance abuse will wipe away a good number of the younger brighter generations that are ambitious to make a different error the nation in different fields.
