Written by on October 17, 2025

The world is mourning the passing of one of Africa’s most iconic statesmen, Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, a man whose political journey, resilience, and democratic convictions shaped the destiny of Kenya and inspired generations across the continent.

From African presidents to global dignitaries, messages of condolence continue to pour in, each reflecting on the indelible mark Raila left on the political landscape.

A Global Outpouring of Tributes

In Nairobi, the Kenyan flag flies at half-mast as the nation comes to terms with the loss of the man many fondly called “Baba.” President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Raila as “a statesman whose courage and love for Kenya transcended politics.”

Across Africa, tributes have been heartfelt and unanimous. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo remembered Raila as “a fearless fighter for freedom and good governance whose democratic ideals will outlive him.” South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed him as “a Pan-Africanist who never wavered in his belief that Africa could and must govern itself with dignity and justice.”

From the United States, President Joe Biden sent condolences to the people of Kenya, calling Raila “a champion of democracy whose sacrifices advanced the cause of freedom and justice not only in Kenya but across Africa.” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres praised Raila’s “unyielding advocacy for peace, reform, and dialogue,” describing him as “a bridge-builder in moments of national uncertainty.”

The Enigma of Raila

Raila Odinga’s life was one of paradox and perseverance — an enigma in every sense. He was detained, exiled, celebrated, and criticized, yet always emerged as a unifying figure at the country’s most defining moments. From the struggle for multi-party democracy to the series of historic political handshakes, his name became synonymous with resilience and reform.

His political career spanned decades, punctuated by moments of sacrifice and statesmanship. Despite not ascending to the presidency, Raila’s influence in shaping Kenya’s democratic ethos is unparalleled. His ability to reinvent himself, build bridges, and rise above personal ambition made him a revered figure both at home and abroad.

A Legacy Etched in the Nation’s Soul

As his body lies in state ahead of interment in his ancestral home, Kenyans continue to reflect on a lifetime of service defined by passion, courage, and patriotism. The streets of Nairobi, Kisumu, and beyond echo with songs of remembrance, the chants of “Baba!” uniting young and old in shared grief.

Leaders from East Africa and beyond are expected to attend the burial, which will take place within 72 hours as per the family’s directive.

In his final years, Raila often said, “My life is about service, not power.” Today, those words ring truer than ever — a timeless reminder that greatness is not measured by the titles one holds, but by the hearts one touches.
