Murder and Suicide Cases on the Rise in Kenya

Written by on May 27, 2025

In recent months, Kenyans have watched in shock and fear as reports of murder cases fill news headlines and social media feeds with alarming frequency. From grisly domestic killings to mysterious disappearances and brutal gang attacks, the country seems to be grappling with a disturbing surge in violent crime — particularly murder.

These cases span across urban and rural areas, affecting both high-profile individuals and ordinary citizens. As the cost of living continues to rise, poverty and desperation have pushed some individuals toward violent crime. Disputes over money, land, and inheritance frequently end in bloodshed.

An increasing number of murder cases are linked to intimate partner violence. Police reports show a spike in gender-based killings, with many involving spouses or lovers. Mental health struggles and lack of conflict resolution support often go unnoticed until tragedy strikes.

And four suicide incidents were separately reported in a worrying trend.

The first incident happened in Msambweni, Kwale County, where a 30-year-old man was found dead. His body was found hanging from a cotton bed sheet around the neck.

Another incident happened in Nandi Hills, Nandi County, where one Victor Kipkosgei, 21, was found hanging on a roof in his house. Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased might have been undergoing some pain, trauma, and stress due to the fracture injury he was nursing on his left leg, police said.

In Homabay,  James Otieno, 30, hanged himself using a manila rope in his house. The motive of the incident is yet to be known.

In Makongeni, Nairobi, a woman identified as Patricia Muendi Meka, 20 died by suicide by hanging herself using a piece of cloth at her mabati house located within Mbotela shopping Centre. The motive of the incident is yet to be known.

Police said the bodies were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident where a six-year-old girl drowned in a well in Opapo Village, Rongo, Migori County. The child was alone in their rented house when they ventured into an open well near there. The child’s parents had left her in the house and left for manual work in the area when the incident happened. The body was moved to a local mortuary pending postmortem.

In major cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, organized crime and gang activity are on the rise. Rival groups fight over control of territory and illegal businesses, leaving residents in fear.

Some killings have gained attention because of how they were planned or publicized online. In a few cases, perpetrators posted confessions or disturbing messages before or after the act, suggesting a troubling trend of violence being used for attention.

Critics argue that slow investigations, delayed justice, and weak witness protection are encouraging impunity. Some murder suspects walk free due to lack of evidence, while others are never apprehended.

Kenyans are now demanding answers and action. Murders like that of university students, children, and entire families have sparked public outrage and protest. Family murder cases in Kenya have become alarmingly frequent, painting a grim picture of violence within homes that were once considered safe havens.

In many cases, the violence escalates silently behind closed doors until it erupts in tragedy. The rise in such cases reflects a deeper societal problem that urgently needs attention through community education, accessible counseling services, and stronger legal protection for vulnerable family members.

Killings of innocent souls, mostly the young kids has become a trending thing. Even the older people, priests, leaders and elders have been killed mercilessly. This has become a bigger issue that should be addressed.

If murder cases continue to rise without serious intervention, public trust in law enforcement and the justice system will weaken further. Every life lost is a tragedy, a family shattered, a future cut short.

Every human being under the sun direly needs the sense of purpose: undeniably if they lack it, they shall feel illegitimate.
Every human being under the sun direly needs the sense of worth; admittedly if they lack it, they shall feel inferior.

Every human being under the sun needs to become mentally, physically, socially and spiritually.

The ambulance’s siren is noisy until it emanates from my home and from your home.
Sorry is powerful only when it is uttered by the medical practitioner.
Health is the mental, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing of an individual under the sun and not merely the absence of any ailment or deformity.

Take care of five before five: take care of your life before your demise.
Take care of your health before sickness.
Take care of your youthfulness before senility.
Take care of your affluence before pins and needles creep in.
Take care of your leisure times before being occupied by all round the clock harbinger of endevours.

Successful mental, physical, social and spiritual endevours.
