KISII BODA BODA RIDERS HIKE FARES

Boda boda riders in Kisii County plying the Matieko to Dol route have hiked their fares, citing the damage done to their motorcycles because of the poor state of the road.

“We have to increase prices because we’re incurring losses due to damage and using too much petrol using longer alternative routes,” said John Opera, a rider who operates in Mosocho, Kisii County.

The road which connects the counties of Kisii and Homa Bay has become dilapidated over the years without repair works being completed.

Peter Ochwangi, a farmer from Nyakoe, said, “It is even worse during rainy and harvesting seasons. We pay triple the amount because the demand is high. Everyone wants their harvest to reach home, so we have to heed to give into the demands of the boda bodas and lorry drivers.”

“We used to pay Ksh100 to Dol, now were paying double. In fact, it’s a massacre when it’s raining; we are forced to pay Ksh400.”

A section of residents said there were some contractors hired to carry out repairs on the road said works stopped because of laxity in payments.
