Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyong’o is expected to appear before the Senate Health Committee on Friday for a virtual session over the alleged misappropriation of COVID-19 funds.

The Governor will be fined Ksh. 500,000 or he will be issued a warrant of arrest if he neglects the Senate Committee summon. On April 20, he was expected to show up before the committee and he didn’t despite numerous adverts over the same on the Daily Nation and Standard newspapers.

The Senate committee says that by him failing to appear before the committee, the Governor’s actions were an offense under Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act 2017.

He has additionally been coordinated to email all documentation on which he expects to use during the summon. Anyang Nyong’o is expected to explain to the Senate the usage of Covid-19 funds and answer audit questions on the misappropriation of Covid-19 funds.

On the other hand, Nyong’o said that the County governments have no control over the increasing Covid-19 infections since the infections have increased due to lack of testing kits.

The leader also urged the Ministry of Health to avail rapid testing kits (antigens) and PCR COVID-19 testing equipment to all counties to prevent the spread of the virus.
