GENDER-BASED-VIOLENCE IN KENYA.
Written by Sharon Amanda on May 19, 2026
Cases of GBV have become rampant over the years globally. However, in Kenya, it remains a major issue. Recent data shows extreme prevalence across different forms.
GBV in Kenya covers physical, psychological, sexual, economic abuse, FGM, child marriage and femicide. Data shows it’s widespread, unde-reported and concentrated in some regions and demographics.
Reports say that 35% of women and girls in Kenya have experienced GBV. 40%of women have experienced physical and sexual violence from a partner at least once.
Between 2022-2024, 366 GBV cases were filed in some coastal counties but only 150 were resolved. Many cases are withdrawn due to family pressure, fear of retaliation, or economic dependence on the accused.
Kenya’s national GBV helpline, 1195 recorded 6000 calls in 2020 alone.
1,639 femicide cases were recorded in 2022-2024.
Intimate Partner Violence is the most common form of GBV in Kenya. Most women and girls experience violence from their current or former partners.
Usikimye, the grassroots org behind “Silencing women” database and the #EndFemicidetKE movement, documented 30+ women killed between January-April 2026.
Fida Kenya recorded the same figure, noting most women were killed by intimate partners or people known to them.
GBV is static. More than 1,639 women killed in 3 years and thousands more living in fear. Every number is a real person. If you need help, call or sms 1195 for free, 24/7 support. Change starts when we refuse to stay silent.
