The national athletics championships got off today at the Kasarani Stadium with a victory by world marathon champion Ruth Chepngetich in the women’s 10,000m.
From start to finish, Chepngetich of the Kenya Prisons Service led her opponent Alice Aprot by more than a minute and a half, crossing the finish line in 31:47.9.
Third-place finisher Judy Komen of the Kenyan Defense Forces finished in 32:32.6 seconds.
This year’s World Championships will be held in Oregon, USA, and Chepngetich, who just joined the military, said she was using the race as part of her preparation.
“This was my second 10k race after the Prisons Championship, and I’m grateful to God for yet another triumph in track.” Chepngetich noted in her post-race interview that she had begun her preparations for the World Championships and was using this race to build on her speed.
Chepngetich, the Nagoya Women’s Marathon champion from last month, has announced that she will run one more race before travelling to the United States for the World Championships.
During my last preparations for the World Championships, I believe I will compete in a 10km event,” “My major aim this season is to defend my crown,” she said.
It wasn’t long ago that Ferdinand Omanyala of the National Police Service set an Africa 100m record with a time of 10.03 seconds to win his heat and qualify for the semi-finals on Wednesday.
“I believe I’m on the right track for big events after competing in my first championships of the season in Kenya.” Having the ability to run under ten minutes in April indicates that things are only going to get better ahead of a hectic schedule. The Africa Championships will be my first important competition this season,” Omanyala said.
KDF’s Lucy Omondi won the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 52.55 meters, beating off Prisons’ Linda Oseso’s 49.28 meters and Police’s Roselyne Rakamba’s 48.95 meters for third place.
It’s Wednesday, the third day of the three-day competition that serves as a qualifier for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius in June.
