CONSERVING KISII COUNTY ENVIRONMENT: A CALL TO ACTION.

 Kisii County, with its lush landscapes and vibrant communities, faces the critical need to protect its environment. As the world marks Environmental Day, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the steps Kisii County can take to ensure a sustainable future.

One of the primary areas of focus should be sustainable agriculture. Promoting eco-friendly farming practices, such as organic farming, can reduce not only the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, but also the cost of purchasing those pesticides and fertilizers.

Additionally, supporting agroforestry, which involves integrating trees into farming systems, it should be as part of other crops cultivated in the region. The county government should come up with initiatives and campaigns to teach its people about the importance of tree planting and also where they should be planting these trees. This will enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and provide additional income for farmers.

Furthermore, Kisii County Government, particularly the Ministry of agriculture and that of Health should prioritize waste management. Implementing effective waste segregation and recycling programs can significantly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. Investing in composting facilities can also turn organic waste into valuable resources for agriculture, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Finally, it is crucial to protect and restore the county’s natural resources. This includes conserving forests, wetlands, and water sources. Reforestation efforts, coupled with the protection of existing forests, can help combat deforestation and its negative impacts on the environment.

By taking these steps, Kisii County government under the governor Paul Simba Arati, can create a healthier environment for its residents and contribute to a more sustainable future. It will not only maintain its green environment, but also create a clean and healthier ecosystem.
