Slapdash slumps in the corporates on the Kenyan soil are currently dwindling courtesy of incubating the German Economist, Investor and Inventor Sir Robert Bosch’s wellness culture. They include, however not limited to:
- The Central Bank of Kenya,
- The British American Tobacco,
- The East African Breweries Public Limited Company,
- The Jambojet,
- The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority,
- The National Treasury,
- Safaricom Public Limited Company and
- Unilever.

An American analytics and advisory company domiciled in Washington says in the,”State Of The Global Workplace 2023 Report,”that engagement levels among workers in Kenya are at 17% with 83% classified either quiet quitting(not engaged) or loud quitting(actively disengaged). Gallup says that engagement has four times as much influence on employees’ stress as work location. What people encounter and experience in their day-to-day works- their feelings of involvement and enthusiasm- matters more in reducing stress than where they are sitting. About 31% of Kenya’s workforce surveyed by Gallup said that they experienced stress daily while 25% said that they experienced daily anger. Loud quitters are classified by Gallup being the employees who actively, openly as pique contamaciously taking the bull by the horns; including, however not limited to opposing heads at workplaces and undercutting goals. Quiet quitters are defined by the Gallup being the employees who are mentally, psychologically, socially and spiritually disintegrated from their employers; however they are “filling a seat and watching the clock,” by simply putting in the bare minimum efforts required.
The British American Tobacco Company trailblazed the gender pay gap disclosures and have had their feathers borrowed by the Centum Investments and the Equity Group.
No Airline in Africa has a higher proportion of female employees than the Jambojet. Their fleet of Dash 8Q 400s, dubbed the Queens Of Bush Flying, explains it all. With 407 staff members, 207 of them are women constituting to 51%, the largest so far in Africa. According to the International Society Of Women Airline Pilots: the population of female pilots globally is just over 5%. Jambojet which is the largest regional aviation company has employed eleven and thirteen pilots and engineers respectively.
At the end of December 2023, 6,233 were women employees; marking 1,017 increase from 5,216 in 2022. Currently, women account for 51% of the Kenya Commercial Bank Group’s workforce of 12,221; compared to 47% at the end of 2022. For every one additional man hired in the KCB Group in 2023, ten female employees were recruited. “For the first time, the KCB Group now has more female than male employees. I am pleased to note that as a result of our deliberate efforts to entrench diversity and inclusion at the workplace, the proportion of female employees in the organization rose to 51% in 2023,”KCB Group’s CEO, Mr. Paul Russo. In 2023: 106 and 1,017 men and women employees respectively were employed by the KCB Group. In 2023: 41% of senior management level jobs were held by women and this year is at 44%. 759 employees were promoted; 40% about 304 being women.
Of the 3,022 employees at the end of December 2022; 51% are women employees at the NCBA Group.
In March 2023: the National Treasury did set up a gym for its staff; targeting helping them to keep fit and improve bonding and team building spirit. The free to use facility is located within Bima House in Nairobi and is fully equipped with modern training equipment and can accomodate 250-300 users daily at different intervals. It operates as from 05:00 A.M.Roman Time to 09:00 P.M. Roman Time daily during weekdays and 08:00A.M.03:00 P.M.Roman Time during weekends and holidays.”It is a welfare facility and will therefore be free of charge. The Health Club is fully equipped with modern equipment for training and is intended to operate daily,” said Treasury during its official search for gym operators.
The Central Bank of Kenya and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority are following into the Treasury’s footsteps.The KCAA refurbished and converted the mezzanine floor at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Tower’s Building into a gym.

The East African Breweries Public Limited Company awed the market by classifying pregnancy loss as bereavement and introduced up to 26 weeks of paid leave for the affected female employees to grieve; setting a new bar for Kenya’s employees’ welfare.
The brewer is giving female employees or spouses up to ten working days of paid leave if the pregnancy loss occurs before 20 weeks. For a pregnancy loss taking place after 20 weeks, one will be given 26 weeks of paid leave. EABL says employees’ well-being is of utmost priority and the firm continues to update its policies to allow workers to enjoy life at home and at work.”We have created an environment and culture where all our people can thrive at work and home. With our culture top of mind, we have embraced flexible working and continued to drive financial, mental, physical and social well-being amongst our employees,”EABL is considering introducing a ten day compassionate leave for employees who lose a child, spouse, partner or parent. There will be five days for the loss of another family’s member and one day for a close friend or non family’s member. EABL’s pregnancy loss leave is above the one-month leave provided for in the Employment(Amendment) Act For Female Employees who suffer stillbirth. The Act which was passed in April 2022, gives a one month leave to an employee who is an adoptive parent of a child who is below below the age of two, pointing to the place of law in furthering employees’ welfare.
Safaricom was among the first firms that pioneered nursing stations for breastfeeding workers; has taken wellness to another level by allowing staff to plan their leave days in advance to spend time with their families. Safaricom increased its toll free access to dedicated psychologists from two to six being part and parcel of improving its employees’ assistance. “We introduced company scheduled leave to enable employees take advantage of days preceding or following public holidays and the Christmas’ break so that they could reconnect with their families and communities,”Safaricom.
