FLAMES OF DESPAIR: KISII’S MARIKITI MARKET REDUCED TO ASHES IN DEVASTATING INFERNO

Written by on July 1, 2025

Kisii town was left reeling yesterday as a massive fire swept through the historic Marikiti market, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake. The inferno, which broke out in the dawn of Sunday at around 2 am, gutted the bustling marketplace, reducing it to a smoldering ruin.

“I was awoken by the sound of screams and the acrid smell of smoke,” said Jane Odhiambo, a local resident who witnessed the blaze. “By the time I got to the market, the fire had already engulfed several stalls. It was like a nightmare come true.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Governor Simba Arati was quick to condemn the incident, describing it as an arson attack. “It is totally unacceptable, indecent, and inhumane for anyone to torch people’s properties for any reason,” he said, his voice laced with outrage.

For the traders who lost their livelihoods in the fire, the incident is a devastating blow. “I’ve lost everything,” said Mary Akinyi, a fruit vendor who had been selling at the market for over a decade. “I don’t know how I’ll recover from this. I’ve invested my entire life savings in this business.”

Another trader, echoed Akinyi’s sentiments. “This market is more than just a place of business for us,” he said, fighting back tears. “It’s our lifeblood. Without it, we’re nothing.”

Governor Arati, who visited the scene of the fire, pledged his administration’s support to help the affected traders rebuild their livelihoods. “I stand with my people who have lost a lot and pledge that my administration will support your effort to rebuild your source of livelihoods again,” he said.

The Governor has also called upon the security agencies to leave no stone unturned in investigating the incident and bringing the culprits to book. “We will not rest until justice is served,” he vowed.

As the people of Kisii come to terms with the loss, the community is rallying behind the affected traders. Local leaders, including MP Zaheer Jhanda and Senator Onyonka, have condemned the incident and pledged their support.

“We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who have lost their livelihoods,” said Jhanda. “We will work together to rebuild and restore the market to its former glory.”

As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the people of Kisii are left to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community.
