Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has said the Mount Kenya region, particularly Mt Kenya East, will support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 even if he drops Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as his running mate.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, July 27, Ruku maintained that the region would rally behind Ruto’s candidature regardless of whether Kindiki is retained on the 2027 ticket.
According to the CS, the choice of a running mate is the President’s prerogative, adding that Kenya Kwanza supporters should respect Ruto’s decision regardless of whom he picks for the election.
Even so, Ruku said he personally supports Kindiki’s retention as DP, citing his performance as President Ruto’s principal assistant, a role he argued the DP has executed exceptionally well.
“I support Kindiki to continue being the DP because he has performed very well as Ruto’s principal assistant. He has outperformed himself as DP, and I think he is suited to be the DP from 2027 to 2032,” Ruku stated.
“If he is not picked, we will continue supporting President Ruto. It is the prerogative of the head of state to choose his running mate. It is his prerogative to choose his running mate,” he added.
Led by ODM Acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo, the leaders maintained that the party’s support for Ruto’s re-election hinges on securing the Deputy President’s position in negotiations with UDA.
“UDA should produce the president while ODM will produce the DP, and we will present Wycliffe Oparanya,” Junet Mohamed said during the rally in Malava.
