It has been a tearful moment for Kenyatta University VC after Uhuru blasted him in a land row lecture while addressing the university staff on the 9th of July, there were letters too directed to the same vice-chancellor asking him to cede the land claimed for public projects.

Bado nimebaki na wiki tatu (I am left with only three weeks), we shall deal with those individuals swiftly and effectively.  Tutaenda nyumbani nao (We will go home with them). We can’t have people operating as individuals, we operate on behalf of the people. We operate on behalf of the global community which we are part of,” Uhuru said while weighing on the land row. These were the harsh words directed at the university administration which left them in dilemma.

The major issue is the fight between the university administration and the state over the land that is to be surrendered for the construction of the who hub

According to the letters from Kinyua, 30 acres will go to the WHO emergency hub while some will be donated to squatters. The letter also stated that 180 acres will go to the neighboring Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital. Another 190 acres will now be given to the 10,000 squatters who already occupy the land illegally.

Kenyatta university land now reduces to 590 acres which ghas been 1000acres before some land was donated for variuos public purposes.

The president defended the state stating that the university administration does not own the land but it belongs to the government. Stating that they were just caretakers.“Some people see it as if this land is their own property, no it’s not! This is public land and you are just a caretaker. Where you recognize that and the whole government approach then you recognize that the government has never worked in isolation,”.

Based on the high pressure from the state, professor Wainaina addressed the KU staff on the 12th of July at 12:30 pm and opened up on the matter stating that he was asked to surrender the 310-acre land without fail in line with that, to submit the title deeds. He said that he was aware of another council being formed and that could be his last time addressing them as their VC. Am aware that the new council is being formed, and I do not have the mandate to cede the university’s land as the vice-chancellor. This is the reason am addressing you for the last time as the vice-chancellor.

Professor Wainaina joined the Kenyatta university board in 2005 and became an acting VC in 2016. He became a full vice-chancellor in 2018 to date. Before, he was a primary teacher.
