Written by on May 16, 2022

Raila Odinga, the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition’s flag bearer, has chosen NARC Kenya Party leader Martha Karua as his running Mate in the upcoming August 2022 General Elections.
11 applicants were put through their paces before a selection panel, which narrowed the field to three and sent them to Odinga for his ultimate judgment.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc-Martha Kenya’s Karua, Jubilee Party’s Sabina Chege, Jubilee Party’s Peter Kenneth, ODM’s Ali Hassan Joho, and Stephen Tarus are among the candidates that attended for vetting (National Liberal Party).

Three other candidates were questioned, including Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, deputy ODM leader Wycliffe Oparanya, and Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui. In the end, Gideon Moi, the KANU Party chairman who had previously been nominated, decided not to support Kalonzo.

Kenyan political activist, human rights fighter, and reformer known as Karua is dedicated to social justice, rule of law, and the development of institutions that are held responsible.

Her legal career began in 1981 as a Magistrate, and she went on to form one of the most successful women-led law companies in Kenya at the time, Martha Karua & Co. Advocates, before going into private practice as a founding partner.

As a result of her election, Kirinyaga’s first female MP was elected in Gichugu constituency.

Martha served in Kenya’s government for more than six years, holding numerous roles.  She served as Kenya’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs from 2005 to 2009, during which time the country’s most progressive constitution was enacted.
