After six years of marriage, a couple in India is suing their son and daughter-in-law for failing to provide them with grandkids.
Haridwar residents Sadhana and Sanjeev Prasad are seeking damages from their 35-year-old son and 31-year-old daughter in an Indian courtroom this month.
An Indian couple who claim to have spent $257,000 raising their lone kid have filed a plea with the Supreme Court of India, as viewed by CNN.
A legal spokesman for the couple’s legal team, Arvind Srivastava, said on Monday, “They reared him, taught him, made him competent, made him a pilot—which was costly.”
“They watch other people in their area having fun with their grandkids and think that they should have one of their own.
Their son and daughter-in-law were not married so that they could live alone, they said. We give them an ultimatum: either give us a grandchild or compensate us in one year.
That’s what Srivastava said: “There is no one to take care of them,” and “all parents want to be grandparents one day.”
The couple’s son and daughter-in-law have not been able to be reached by CNN, and it is unclear whether they have retained legal counsel. On Tuesday, there will be a procedural hearing in the case.
The Prasads allegedly purchased a vehicle for their son and daughter-in-law and covered the costs of their honeymoon, according to the petition.
As part of the petition, there are allegations against the family of the alleged victim’s daughter-in-law as well.
The question of family obligations has long been contentious in India, where caring for aging parents and in-laws and carrying on the family line is generally considered as a filial responsibility. Even though this kind of case is unusual,
In certain cases, it’s even a legal requirement: under federal law, parents may claim a monthly allowance from their adult children to safeguard elderly parents and parents who may be unable to care for themselves.
One such case involving a family quarrel over monthly payments resulted in a Supreme Court judge addressing the disputing sons: “Don’t forget, you are everything because of (your father),” making headlines in India in recent years.
