Residents of Kisii County have castigated the incident that occurred yesterday Monday, 31 whereby protesters and media persons were attacked by unknown goos at Nyatieko, Kitutu Chache South in Kisii County. Speaking one on one to Radio Vuna the residents have come out in one voice to condemn the act done by people who are said to have been hired by a local politician.

“We are against the act by those goons, people with retrogressive minds and we call upon the Ministry of interior led by Fred Matiang’i to do their investigations expeditiously and bring to book those people,” said a resident.

The residents have accused the county government for not giving them the opportunity to air out their views in peace.

“The Constitution of Kenya allows for peaceful demonstrations. We are Kenyans and we have a guarantee to hold peaceful demonstrations to show our dissatisfaction, “said a resident.

The residents have blamed community policing famous as Nyumba kumi for leading in the attack against the residents. The residents of Nyatieko have hit the headlines for some time now for their firm stand against the county government for planning to plant a dumpsite in the area.

“Most of those people who were attacking us are well-known to us and they are actually the old Zungu Zungu, they were by people known to us but all we say is that we will not give up but we shall push for our justice for the sake of us and our children. We are ready to die just for the sake our future,” area resident of Nyatieko said.

The residents have been accusing the County Government for taking it upon itself to make decisions without consulting them something which as caused a row. The police lobbyed teargas to disperse the protesters and its alleged that their car hit a child while running away from the scene.

Media personnel are among those that were attacked and saw their equipment destroyed by people who had machetes and in a probox that was mudded making it hard for them to even see the number plates.

“The team was led by a senior security personnel from the county government,” said a source that claimed anonymity.

According to the county they had bought the piece of land to set a dumpsite alongside a factory that will be managing the site. In the meantime the residents have vowed never to give up till they find justice.
