NRG, CAPITAL FM AMONG OTHER 60 RISKING RADIO FREQUENCY CANCELLATION

As a result of license violations, the Kenyan Communications Authority (CA) has threatened to remove frequencies and shut down 60 radio stations.
As a result of their inability to comply with the terms of their licenses as stipulated by the Kenyan Information and Communication Act, a number of radio stations have been accused of breaking the law.
Section 46C of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, states that it is unlawful to broadcast in Kenya without a license from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), the authority’s Director General Ezra Chiloba stated in a notice released on Wednesday.
“A punishment of up to Ksh.1,000,000 or three years in jail, or both, will be imposed if this condition is violated.”
All broadcast services would be shut down if a station fails to comply with the license rules established by the California Department of Communications (CA) within 30 days.
Failure to comply with the license requirements as communicated in writing to each broadcaster and applicant named in this notice within 30 days implies that the affected party is no longer interested in delivering the said broadcast services,” Chiloba noted.
As a result, “the Authority shall move to withdraw the FM frequencies issued and shut down the related broadcasting services without further notice to the broadcaster or the applicant.”
Koch FM, Serian, Rware, and Western were singled out by the authorities for having broadcast licenses that had expired.
Additionally, the CA has identified 18 additional broadcasters who have not applied for broadcasting licenses.
More than a dozen companies are participating in this year’s competition: Misoft; Ujuzi; Atlantic Edge; Cornerstone; Rongo; Redeeemd; Ron; Red; Qooly; Mwarima FM; Media 1, Mawen; Jokanyo; Neemali; Hometrack and Haki FM are among them.
More than a dozen radio stations have been added to a list of those who have not paid their regulatory fees, including Radio Mikayi, Thayu FM, Mitume, Kimuri and Osotua as well as other stations.
There were 19 applications for commercial free to air television licenses that were rejected by the CA because they did not meet its standards.
Among them are Shade TV, Ene TV, Youth TV, Nairobi TV, Pokot TV, Bururi TV, Smart TV, Three Stones TV, Mother & Child TV, and Bazaar TV.
CA also revoked the licenses granted to three other applicants who had filed for permits to provide subscription broadcasting services.
Digital broadcasters such as Qatken and Lancia Digital Broadcasting Limited are included.
