After the Standard Gauge Railway ,SGR, Kenya is set to experience a new trend in the transport sector after the introduction of the BRT buses soon. The Bus rapid transport systen (BRT) will be rolled out in the Nirobi Metropolitan Area. in june this year with the kenyatta national hospital to rogai being the pilot routes.
The most interesting part of this new road transport typeis that it will be cashless. Passengers will utilize a specific toll payment card to access the BRT system along multiple corridors within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
The commuter rail payment system will use a card filled with points that passengers will swipe to pay before boarding, according to Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga.
Passengers will also be able to fill their cards digitally or visit a vendor at the BRT lanes’ termini using mobile money payment (M-PESA).
The government is aiming to launch six BRT corridors in Nairobi , which In comparison to traditional buses, system is designed to improve a city’s public transportation network by reducing pollution and traffic jams.
The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Likoni, James Gichuru-Rironi, and Bomas to Ruiru highways are priority corridors.
The government intends to achieve this clean transport system by not allowing petrol and diesel buses to acces the BRT roads
Only electric and select hybrid vehicles that use both electric and fossil fuels, as well as biofuels like hydrogen and biogas, would be allowed in the corridors, according to PS Hinga.
The corridors will eventually cover the Ngong Road to Juja, Mama Lucy to T-Mall, and Balozi to Imara roads, among others.
