TEENAGE PREGNANCIES AND THE WAY FORWARD

At a time when the world is going through hard times some vices have taken advantage of the situation. The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) not only has it affected lives and livelihoods but it has also proven a potential hatching ground for unbecoming vices. Teenage pregnancies have remained a great test of time and most have fallen to it. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in Kenya which saw the closure of different sectors including the education sector the cases have skyrocketed.

Ms Edinah Kangwana, Minister for Administration, Kisii county and also  a champion for rights of the girl child has firmly stood out to condemn the rise of teenage pregnancies in the county. Speaking to Radio Vuna during Oyera show, a show hosted by Zachary Mayieka the minister took the opportunity to .

“Teenage pregnancies is atopic like no other that should be given a close attention especially during this period of COVID-19 when the vulnerability of our teenagers has been openly exposed to the world to see and witness,” Ms Kangwana.

She was in the company of Ms Magdeline Mwebi alias St. Jude who is a renownwd businesswoman in Kisii town and Gender Advisor Kisii County. St. Jude used the opportunity to castigate the rise in teenage pregnancies terming it as the most unfortunate thing that has happened during these unprecedented times.

“I would like to caterigocally pin-point that this is so unfortunate. Besides our daughters getting pregnant they are also endangered with sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS. This puts our girls’ lives in danger even though they may successfully evade the pregnancies but HIV/AIDS has claws open to grab them,” ST. Jude.

The duo raised their fists against parents who they believe have failed to offer the necessary guidance to their children. They have made a clarion call to all parents in the region to the lives of their children seriously by being available at all times to the needs of their children.
