Governor Kivutha Kibwana of Makueni has withdrawn from the campaign for president in the next general election on August 9.

Kibwana, who had indicated interest in running for the country’s highest office under the Muungano Party, now says he would back Raila Odinga, the head of the Orange Democratic Movement.

On Monday in Naivasha, when Odinga met with governors aligned with his Azimio La Umoja movement, Kibwana said, “I conferred with the people of Makueni and they given me the go-ahead to support Azimio.”

Decentralization advocates have honored Kenyan ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga as “the father of devolution,” according to Kibwana.

This is what he had to say when asked about Raila Odinga’s support for him: “Raila Odinga amepiganiauhuruwa”

As a result, Kibwana believes that “he is indeed the father of devolution, that is unquestionable,” as she said in an interview in 2010: “Ikiwani Ni Katiba ya 2010 Alikuwa Mbele Alisaidiana na Wenzake Kuileta.”

However, the Makueni county chief claimed that his State House candidacy is not over, and that he intends to run for president in the future.

It’s unlikely that the 67-year-old governor would run for president again anytime soon on the Muungano Party’s ticket.

Across 30 governors from all over the nation endorsed the ODM leader’s presidential candidacy on Monday at the convention in Abuja.

It was attended by Kitui’s Governor Charity Ngilu, as well as her colleagues in Nakuru, Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa, Hassan Joho; in addition, Kitui’s Deputy Governor Wycliffe Oparanya; and in the coastal city of Emu, Governor Ann Kananu (Nairobi).
