Kalonzo Makes a U-turn and decides to attend Azimio Interview

Written by on May 10, 2022

Earlier this week, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka reversed course and said he would no longer refuse to go before the interview panel tasked with evaluating possible deputies to deputize Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga during his August presidential candidacy.

According to Odinga’s Campaign Press Secretary Dennis Onsarigo, Kalonzo will face the 7-member bench on Tuesday, May 10.

At 9 a.m. today, the Azimio La Umoja DP selection team will interview Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, and the panel will provide its conclusions to the party leader later this week, according to Onsarigo.

Kalonzo had refused to go through the screening process because he believed he should be the default choice for the role and that the process was “demeaning.”

Out of a total of twenty applications, the panel had narrowed the field down to eight finalists: Musyoka, Sabina Chege (Jubilee Party), Martha Karua (NARC Kenya), Charity Ngilu (NARC), Peter Kenneth (Jupilee Party), Gideon Moi (KANU), Ali Hassan Joho (ODM), and Stephen Tarus (National Liberal Party). Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya are the others.

Kalonzo’s quest has seen the endorsement of his own party, as well as Gideon Moi’s KANU party.

It was announced by Moi’s camp on Monday that he would not be coming before the selection panel as scheduled, but would instead be withdrawing from the contest in favor of Kalonzo.

Although Senator Gideon Moi is qualified and capable of serving as Odinga’s running partner, the senator will not be participating in this race. The KANU Secretary for Political Affairs Fredrick Okang’o declared that he had given up his candidacy to back Kalonzo Musyoka.

Candidate interviews for the position of vice president in an Odinga administration began on Wednesday, May 4 and will conclude on Tuesday.

Ahead of the IEBC deadline of May 16 for presidential hopefuls to submit the names of their running partners, Odinga would then publicly disclose the winner (IEBC).
