Mental health is one of the key topics that most readers would defer reading between the lines, today we are broadly looking at it and how it has affected the current generation

When we mention mental health, what comes first into your mind. People will always confuse and mix the definition of mental health, but today we give you a well-elaborated meaning of mental health, it’s simply the behavioural and emotional well-being of someone. The engine behind this is your mind which gears everything. In a more simple layman’s language, we can say that mental health is a state of well-being, that one realizes his or her own abilities and can cope with any kind of challenges like stress to be productive to the society or community.

In my narration, I will major mostly on what gives one a mental health disorder. But before that, do you really get concerned and seek to know if you got any mental health disorder? Are you incorporating the mental health program in your life for your own common good with your siblings? Most of us are ignorant and this ends up escalating the disorder arising because you havent acquired the skills to come over the normal life challenges like stress. Some of the causes of mental health disorders are such as, social and economic pressure. This happens when you belong to a family that is poor and isn’t accepting the situation to move on, belonging to a marginalized group where there is always intimidation and perhaps where you live too can lead to a disorder. Education too is another factor that will always lead to a mental disorder. This happens to most of our students who with time get depressed and need a shoulder to lean on.

Our young generation in universities will always kill themselves just because of depression. This is an outcome of mental health disorder. This is always a result of a lack of school fees as well as a financial crisis. Another factor leading to this is the biological factor. In a family, there might be one or two siblings who might have encountered such a challenge and this takes generation after generation. The genes are highly involved. However, we must be ready to accept and fight this disease. An example of these disorders is anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia disorders.

As much as anxiety is a disorder, it is not a medical problem. Under anxiety, we can mention a few examples like post-traumatic disorder, panic disorder, and phobia disorder which are categorized as simple phobia and social phobia.

We have mood anxiety mostly dealing with depression, mania{high energy, and elation.}An example of this disorder is bipolar disorder and major depression. The last example is schizophrenia disorder. Mostly being about the youth between 16 to 30 years of age. Causes thoughts that are fragmented, lack of information processing, lack of motivation, and inappropriate mood.

Early signs of mental disorders are for instance: lack of sleep, eating too much food, eating less food, lack of hope, withdrawal from active groups, staying indoors, being confused, thinking of causing harm to themselves or others, delusions, hearing voices, displaying negative emotions and consistent low energy.

What most Kenyans fail to understand is that there is always help for all these mental problems to be eradicated . For treatment, always link yourself to support network groups like your family members who can always offer mental support. The government has always provided a helpline where you can call 911 and have a one-on-one talk with a therapist. Counseling has always been the best way to go about mental health disorders. In terms of medication, we got antidepressants though some of them have side effects like getting sleepy.

We are always encouraged to prevent some mental disorders like anxiety by engaging in recreational activities like physical exercises, avoiding more coffee, tea, and chocolate, having a good regular sleeping pattern and avoiding illicit substances, and above all having a balanced diet. Always seek a therapist who will diagnose if you got a mental disorder regularly, an activity that will keep you and your siblings going for your own common good.
