The Nyamira County Assembly witnessed a heightened police presence this morning as Esise MCA, Josiah Mang’era, moved forward with an impeachment motion against Governor Amos Nyaribo.
The assembly convened under tight security measures following an incident where unidentified individuals attempted to block the assembly entrance with stones and raw sewage the previous night.
The impeachment motion against Governor Nyaribo is rooted in allegations of abuse of office and gross violation of the constitution.
A total of 28 out of the 34 members of the assembly had signed the petition on September 22 to remove the governor from office.
The decision to impeach Governor Nyaribo comes in the wake of controversy surrounding his dismissal of District Health Minister Timothy Ombati.
The MCAs cite a range of grievances against Governor Nyaribo, alleging misconduct and disregard for legal procedures.
They argue that the governor was responsible for the appointments of Godfrey Kiriago, Nyangau and Elmelda Kemunto Nyaberi to the positions of Director of Human Resource Management and Human Resource Officer, respectively, without adhering to proper vetting procedures.
In addition to these allegations, the MCAs assert that Governor Nyaribo violated court orders once more by appointing Clive Ogwora as County Executive Committee Member for Environment, Water, and Natural Resources.
The MCAs accuse Governor Nyaribo of overseeing the implementation of an illegal budget that allegedly denied the people of Nyamira essential public goods and services valued at Sh. 444.5 million.
Furthermore, they claim that Governor Nyaribo defied court orders nullifying these appointments they and allege that he illegally dismissed the CEO of the Nyamira County Public Service Board and unlawfully re-designated the role of Accounting Officer of the County Public Service Board.
Additional allegations include the governor’s purported involvement in flagging off empty containers disguised as medical drugs and deliberately delaying the completion of the Nyamira County Headquarters.
The MCAs also accuse Governor Nyaribo of nepotism and favoritism, citing the appointment of his niece, Purity Moraa, a junior accountant, to the position of Head of Accounting Services.
As the impeachment proceedings continue, the future of Governor Amos Nyaribo remains uncertain, with the assembly determined to address the allegations of misconduct and abuse of power.
