HISTORICAL FIRST LADY JUSTICE IN THE UHURU REGIME

It’s a congratulation to Lady Justice Martha Koome. On Monday Koome officially assumed office Chief Justice. This made her the 15th chief justice but the first Lady to become chief justice in Republic of Kenya under the reign of His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, putting history into the Kenyan judicial service commission. This makes the attainment of the three third gender rule for now the Supreme Court has three female judges and four male judges who are, Hon. Lady Justice Martha Koome – Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, Hon.Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu – Deputy Chief Justice and Vice President of the Supreme Court, on. Justice Ibrahim, Hon. Justice Dr Smokin Wanjala,Hon. Lady Justice Njoki Susanna Ndung’u ,Hon. Justice Isaac Lenaola,Hon. Justice William Ouko making the Supreme Court complete with 7 judges after the retirement of Justice Maraga and Justice Jackton Ojwang .CJ Koome said that no case should continue longer than 3 years stating that it would be a continuation of the retired CJ David Maraga tenure which was to ensure all cases above 5 years are cleared from court.
Let it be known that the appointment and approval of CJ Martha Koome has taken the shortest time possible as stated relating to the previous appointments and approval processes of other retired Chief Justices in Kenya. This shows that her approval was as good will of the government. The government has faith, grace and strong believe on the working of the CJ upon exercising her duties. During the exercise of swearing His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta said that he’s happy on the appointment and wishes her good luck in her exercise of duty. Now it’s expected by Kenyans that they would not witness wrangles between the government and the judiciary as it was during the tenure of CJ David Maraga. However this would pose a big threat to the Supreme Court for CJ Koome would be forced not to rule against the ruling government on cases brought forward to the Supreme to maintain the good will and the relationship between the office of the chief justice and the government.
In a statement issued by the retired president of the supreme court Hon.David Maraga, he advised her that” The Deputy Chief Justice and Vice President of the Supreme Court, together with other judges are now ready to work with you and agree on sharing and help in giving opinion and you should not worry anymore.” He also said that the office is very wanting and it needs her to work with grace. Maraga added that Hon.Koome needs to work closely with other judges to get advice for effective delivery in office.
