The security committee in Siaya County has raised concerns over the increase in murder cases as a result of land disputes across the region.
Speaking during the 60th Madaraka Day celebration at the Siaya KMTC grounds, County Commissioner Jim Njoka said that the rate at which people kill each other because of land disputes in the region is disturbing.
“Instead of killing each other, warring parties should seek legal channels and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms that will prevent such incidences,” he said.
Njoka similarly urged elderly land owners to subdivide their parcels when they are still alive to prevent possible wrangles between their children upon their demise.
The administrator told the residents that they need to be following lawful procedures whenever they are wronged instead of taking the law into their own hands.
“We need to be following lawful procedures whenever we are wronged instead of taking the law into our own hands,” he said.
The County Commissioner stated that most families often fight because of such unresolved issues adding that a girl child should also be included in inheritance since they also have a right to succession.
Njoka also expressed concern over the issue of mob justice across the county and warned that this should also stop.
